My dad’s a type 1 diabetic. When his blood sugar gets low and he takes his glucose tablets, they don’t seem to last very long. His blood sugar goes up, but within like a half hour it gets low again. Sweet stuff and candy seem to work well, but it’s kaming him gain weight. Is there such a food that exists?

It’s not just the sweets that are causing the weight gain, it’s the total number of calories that he takes in. And it takes calories to increase his blood sugar. So no, there is no food that is calorie free and can cause a rise in in bg.
Glucose tabs will cause a rapid rise in blood sugar and you are right, it doesn’t last very long.
The rule (according to the ADA) is to eat 15 grams of carbohydrates and check your blood glucose after 15 minutes. And then repeat the 15 grams until you get a normal bg reading.
He should check with his doctor about his diet – maybe after taking a glucose tab, he should have a more substantial meal to keep his blood sugar normal.
Since he’s a type 1, he needs to regulate his insulin – something that his doctor should advise him on.
anything with processed sugar, high fructose syrup, starches, corn, bread,,,all raise sugar levels….did he see a nutritionist and get a diabetic diet sheet to follow? maybe he is eating too many calories and not getting enough exercise
Well, if he doesn’t exercise much then of course he’ll gain weight no matter what he eats. But I’ve got a low blood sugar, and tend to pass out without the proper intake of sugar. I suggest for him to sip fruit juices throughout the day. That way he won’t get a “Sugar Crash” and his blood sugar should remain at a respectable rate. But don’t let the juice replace food in his life! Too many times I’ve seen that happen.
