I wouldn’t worry too much about it, just be aware of sugars and starch. Of all the people who get diabetes, 95% have type II, only 5% get type I.

Some say Type 1 diabetes is actually an auto-immune disorder. Your immune system mistakenly attacks your pancreas. Later, these diabetics are watched by their doctors for developing Hashimotos disease (thyroid )- another auto-immune disorder. Some say it could have been a virus that attacked the pancreas. Either way, your best defense is keeping a “clean body” Lots of water, fiber, RAW foods, antioxidants, colon and liver cleansing, etc. It CANNOT be reversed, unlike Type II, which can be controlled by diet, or losing weight sometimes.

Every parent who has Diabetes has a 1 in 30 chance of passing it on to their child. There is a test you can take to gage your chances of getting diabetes, and you can find more information about it on the ADA website. You can develop Diabetes at any age though, so please watch your daughter for symptoms like weight loss, frequent urination, fatigue, and sickness or vomiting. I hope your daughter does not have it, but if she does it’s the best chronic disease to have because it is manageable.

No one knows for certain what causes Type 1 diabetes, but one of the theories is genetics. Since your husband has been living with it most of his life, he is aware of the signs – thirst, lessening of appetite, weight loss, frequent urination. It is entirely possible that your daughter could become a Type 1, but it’s also possible she won’t. IMO, the best thing to do is to make sure your pediatrician is aware of the family history and to keep an eye on your daughter for signs of the disease without frightening her. I have three grown children and only one is a Type I, diagnosed at 12 years. No one in either my husband’s family or mine has Type I either. There’s not much rhyme or reason to it but it might make you feel better to familiarize yourself with more detailed info at the jdf website. Good luck!

If a father has type 1, the child has a 1 in 17 chance of developing diabetes.
A child has a 1 in 25 chance of developing diabetes if the mother has type 1 and gave birth before the age of 25. Chances are 1 in 100 if the child was born after the mother was 25.
A child has a 1 in 7 chance of developing diabetes if the father has type 2 diabetes and was diagnosed befor the age of 50, chances are 1 in 13 if the father was diagnosed after the age of 50.
If both parents have type 2 diabetes, a child has a 1 in 2 chance of developing the disease.
This is just a tid bit of information that I got out of one of my diabetes magazines recently
