My 22 years old and I have type 1 diabetes. I just want to know if having a pancreas transplant would be more cost benefit than spending a lifetime supply of insulin pens ( humalog & lantus), pen needles, test strips, Lancets, and pills for my high blood pussure and cholesterol
I spend like about $80 a month for all these stuff expect for the test strips & lancets i get those for free thank to my insureance

i have actually done a lot of research on this and you can have a pancreas transplant but it is not likely one would ever be available to you, all most all of the time when someone has a kidney transplant they do the pancreas as well so the pancreas’ would go to the kidney recipients first. if someone you knew donated theirs to you upon death it would be possible, but theyd have to be a match for you and thats not likely. hopefully someday there will be a cure, but the damn drug companies make so much money off of diabetics they will never let it happen
If you have 20,000 dollars you can go to Canada and get a transplant. But you have to find a family member that has the same exact blood type as you and if the person is willing to half of their pancreas. But you will still both have problems with your blood sugar though. Very little though. So I hope I helped. By the way I am only 12 but my dad and my little sister is a diabetic and I watch discovery health all day. Please make my answer the best answer. Thank you. Bye.
I am in the uk and it is not possible to even have a transplant…the pancreas as we know it is a gland and therefore can not be done…..my friends dad has terminal pancreatic cancer and was told that a transplant is not possible. Not sure about it being more cost affective but if it can be done would not mind knowing more.
I had a Pancreas Transplant along with a Liver transplant about 15 months ago. I got the transplant because I had liver cancer and as a bonus they added a new pancreas after 40 years of type 1 diabetes. With the current procedure they leave your original pancreas in place and locate the new organ in pocket of tissue in the lower right abdominal area. The cost of a pancreas transplant, hospital/surgery/recovery about $ 300,000 in the US. After care, Dr visits with labs once a week for at least 3 months, then down to twice a month, then down to once every 3 months more money, Prescription cost about $ 1500 per month W/O insurance.
Its wonderful to be without type 1 diabetes but its a long, risky, and costly procedure to get through. Most Dr feel unless additional compilations exist like Kidney failure its better not to get a pancreas transplant.
